The Nigerian government has initiated a formal request for compensation regarding property abandoned by a South African flight at Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport. The aircraft, operated by South African Airways, was impounded in 2020 due to a contractual dispute involving a Nigerian airline. Diplomatic sources indicate that Abuja is now seeking financial restitution for the depreciation and storage costs of the equipment left behind.
The move comes amid strained relations between Africa’s two largest economies. South African authorities have expressed willingness to negotiate but caution against unilateral actions that could escalate tensions. The dispute underscores broader challenges in intra-African aviation agreements and the enforcement of bilateral air service treaties.
Analysts note that Nigeria’s demand for compensation may set a precedent for future incidents involving seized aircraft assets.
