In a development that has shocked precisely no one with a functioning cerebral cortex, Vladimir Putin has emerged from his bunker to wag a trembling finger at Ukraine, accusing them of shelling a student dormitory. The Kremlin, in a statement that could have been written by a feverish AI fed on a diet of Soviet propaganda and cheap vodka, claims this act of ‘terrorism’ justifies an immediate escalation. Because nothing says ‘proportional response’ like turning a university into a crater, apparently.
Let us unpack this latest instalment of the Putin Puppet Show. The dormitory in question, located in the Donetsk region, was reportedly hit by a missile. Who fired it? The Kremlin points at Ukraine. Independent observers, meanwhile, point to the pesky fact that Russia has a well-documented habit of shelling its own people to manufacture casus belli. Remember the shopping centre in Kremenchuk? The theatre in Mariupol? The pattern is about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the skull.
But our dear leader Vlad is not one to let facts get in the way of a good tantrum. He has vowed ‘retaliation’ which, in Putin-speak, translates to more indiscriminate bombing of civilian infrastructure. Perhaps a kindergarten next? Or maybe a maternity ward, for old time’s sake. The man is a connoisseur of war crimes, after all. He’s been perfecting his collection since Chechnya.
Meanwhile, in the parallel universe of Western diplomacy, we have the usual hand-wringing. “Deeply concerned,” they murmur, as if that will stop a missile. “We urge restraint,” they implore, as Putin pours another glass of cognac and orders another barrage. The UN Security Council will convene, where Russia will veto any resolution condemning itself, and the world will move on to the next outrage.
The tragic irony is that real students, real human beings with dreams and hopes and possibly a half-finished essay, are now dead or displaced. Their lives reduced to a bargaining chip in Putin’s delusional quest for a new Russian empire. But don’t expect any apologies from Moscow. They’re too busy painting the victims as ‘Nazis’ or ‘terrorists’ or whatever dehumanising label they’ve scraped from the bottom of the propaganda barrel.
So here we are, again. Russia vows revenge. Ukraine braces for impact. The West tuts and sends more weapons, but not too many, because escalation, you see. And the rest of us are left to wonder: how many more dormitories must burn before someone realises that you cannot negotiate with a man who thinks international law is a suggestion?
This is Barnaby ‘Biff’ Thistlethwaite, filing from the edge of reason. I’m off to drown my cynicism in a bottle of Plymouth gin. Cheers.
