A Republican congressional candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump has been defeated in Iowa's primary election, a setback for Mr Trump's influence within the party. Ted Howes, a retired military officer who had received Mr Trump's support, lost to State Senator Sarah McLeod by a margin of 52 to 48 per cent. The result underscores the limits of Mr Trump's endorsement power in a state where his popularity remains high but local dynamics and candidate quality also factor heavily.
Mr Howes had campaigned on an America First platform, echoing Mr Trump's grievances against the political establishment. Ms McLeod, a pragmatist with strong agricultural policy credentials, ran a disciplined campaign focused on local issues. Analysts suggest the defeat may prompt a recalibration of Mr Trump's electoral strategy for the 2024 cycle.
