The American actor James Handy, best known for supporting roles in film and television over three decades, has been killed in a stabbing at his home in Los Angeles. The suspect, the 23-year-old son of his girlfriend, has been arrested, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed on Wednesday.
Handy, 71, was found with multiple stab wounds at his residence in the Studio City neighbourhood shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Emergency services pronounced him dead at the scene. Police said the suspect, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody without incident several hours later. A motive remains under investigation.
Handy’s career spanned television series such as “The West Wing,” “Friends,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” as well as films including “The Money Pit” and “The American President.” He was a graduate of the Yale School of Drama and had recently been performing in a local theatre production.
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of domestic violence protocols in Los Angeles County. The case has been assigned to the department’s domestic violence division, though officers declined to characterise the relationship between Handy and the suspect beyond the familial connection.
Neighbours described hearing raised voices prior to the attack. Handy had been living with his girlfriend and her son for the past two years, according to property records. The girlfriend was not present at the time of the incident and is cooperating with investigators.
The suspect is being held without bail at the Los Angeles County Jail, pending a court appearance scheduled for Thursday. He is expected to be charged with murder. Legal experts note that California law allows for potential consideration of diminished responsibility if mental health factors are raised.
