The families of the 158 victims of the Air India crash have released a joint statement, their grief crystallised into a single, devastating sentence: 'We don’t look at the sky anymore.' The aircraft, which crashed in the Arabian Sea on 15 March, has left a void that extends beyond the personal. Each victim was a data point in the vast machinery of global aviation, which operates under the assumption that the sky is a safe, predictable medium. That assumption has been shattered.
Dr. Anjali Menon, a physicist and commentator on aerospace safety, notes that the crash rate for commercial aviation has been stable at approximately one per five million flights. 'Statistically, this is an outlier,' she says. 'But statistics are cold comfort when the tail of the distribution lands in your living room.'
